Our Philosophy: presence, not just practical support
At Side by Side, our philosophy goes beyond practical assistance. We prioritise presence, taking the time to listen, engage, and connect with each person as an individual. Whether through conversation, shared activities, or simply being alongside someone in their day, we offer a steady and respectful presence. We're rooted in reliability, professionalism, care, and the value of human connection. We are not here to rush in and out; we are here to be truly alongside you.

Behind Side by Side: Julie Nicholson's vision
Side by Side is proudly led by Julie Nicholson, a nurse with over 15 years’ experience in the NHS, specialising in GP-led chronic disease management. Julie founded the company after repeatedly noticing a crucial gap in both professional and personal settings: many people receive care, yet often feel rushed, alone, or unseen. Her clinical background, combined with personal experience supporting a close family member living with dementia, has shaped her deep understanding of how chronic illness impacts not only physical health, but also identity, independence, and emotional wellbeing. This service is thoughtfully designed for those who may not require formal care but would greatly benefit from consistent, supportive companionship. Her approach is simple yet intentional: combining practical help with dedicated time, presence, and genuine human connection. This can be through engaging conversations, shared activities, or simply being a supportive presence.

Our dedicated team of wellbeing companions
Our team is carefully selected not only for their reliability and experience but also for their warmth, emotional awareness, and exceptional ability to connect with others. We bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with professional care experience, alongside people naturally suited to this work, such as students and those later in life seeking to contribute meaningfully. What unites them is a genuine interest in people and a capacity to offer calm, attentive support. Every Wellbeing Companion receives comprehensive training in dementia care, health and safety, safeguarding, supporting chronic illness, interpersonal communication, and first aid. Furthermore, every team member is fully background checked and insured. Equally important to their training is their ability to show up with patience, respect, and the skill to meet each person exactly where they are. We are deeply committed to maintaining a team our clients can trust, ensuring consistency, kindness, and reliability in every interaction.
"Julie is an exceptional nurse, caring and empathetic, we know we are in safe hands under her care and can't recommend her enough "
